Soraa GaN-on-GaN LEDs Target Halogen Lamps

Soraa, a Silicon Valley startup founded in 2008, is moving ahead with plans for making energy-efficient GaN-on-GaN LED light bulbs to displace halogen-based lamps that significantly improve brightness, while becoming more like incandescents in look and feel. The company has garnered much attention since a world-renown Japanese LED scientist, Shuji Nakamura, is a founder who is helping drive the company toward success.

Soraa, a startup pursuing a novel way to make energy-efficient light bulbs, plans to sharply raise the bar on their brightness. The company, which has built a factory in Silicon Valley to make its own light-emitting diodes, is unveiling a second generation of lamps that generate 40% more light. Soraa’s new lamps are designed to replace 65-watt and 75-watt bulbs known by the designation MR16, which are often based on halogen technology and typically used in applications such as retail stores, restaurants and art galleries.

Soraa's LEDs are made with an active material layer of gallium nitride and a gallium nitride substrate. Having a single material leads to LEDs that can take more current and thus produce more light on a package of a given size. It also means that there's less wasted heat, which can degrade the life of LED lighting.

The first light Soraa is launching is a lamp to replace a halogen bulb (called an MR16), which are commonly used in places like recessed ceiling lights and spot lights on products in stores and venues. These aren’t lamps for the everyday home owner, and Soraa is targeting commercial and industrial building owners first, before it moves to the residential market.
