How Will the Communications Platform of the Future Work

August 2017

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has previously described telepathy as the “ultimate communication technology” and a way to capture a feeling “in its ideal and perfect form”. A recent article from Tech.co, titled “A Secret Facebook Division Wants to Read Your Mind,” reveals some surprising revelations regarding Facebook’s alleged interest in the supposed communication of thoughts or ideas by means other than the known senses.

With technology advancing at a truly unprecedented rate, the line between innovative reality and science fiction has become irreversibly blurred. Whether its tablets that can make you feel different textures or wearables that are embedded into your skin, it’s getting harder and harder to decipher the differences between actual innovations and lofty fantasies. And if there’s one company that flirts with this line more than anyone, it’s Facebook, especially when you consider the fact that telepathic social media is on their to-do list.

While recent claims are unconfirmed by the social media powerhouse, a number of publications have done some digging to find that Facebook is currently hiring employees that sound an awful lot like the henchmen of a science fiction villain. Recent job postings listed on Facebook’s Building 8 group website describe a hardware project involving “neuroimaging” and “electrophysiological data” in an effort to develop the “communications platform of the future.” If you’re as unversed in brain biology as I am, these are essentially fancy words for “We want to read you mind.”

In addition to these mysterious job postings, Facebook is also looking for engineers that can help to create “novel non-invasive neuroimaging technologies” and “realistic and immersive haptics experiences.” And while telepathy and mind-reading aren’t specifically mentioned in these postings, previous quotes from the social media company’s CEO make their intentions anything but secret.

The Future is More Intelligence.

From smarter lighting to self-driving cars to home automation, a new age of advanced technology is upon us. It’s easy to see why innovations like telepathy are the next logical step on our quest to healthier and more fulfilling lives through smarter technology.
